More information on taxi hire in Glasgow…

As the largest city in Scotland, Glasgow has no shortage of taxi services to help you make your way in and out of the city. There are over 1300 black cab taxis run by Glasgow City Council, and even more private hire cabs available to be booked in advance. Here is a quick guide to planning your taxi journey in the city.

Glasgow Taxi Hire Services and Taxi Ranks

Glasgow black cabs, otherwise known as hackney cabs, have a special license to pick passengers up from the street. They must display a license and will also show you the fare throughout your journey. These black cabs generally carry up to five passengers, and can be hailed down as you see them pass.

You can also visit a designated taxi rank in the city to start your journey. The ranks include Central station, Buchanan bus station, Byres Road in the West End, and Queens street station. Glasgow taxi hire companies are generally easy to come by except for late at night on the weekends as the bars close.

The minimum fare for travel around Glasgow city centre is £1.50-£2.00. Driving to the Burrell collection from the city centre is likely to cost up to £7. To save money on your journey, opting for a private hire taxi (which means you must phone to book in advance) usually means cheaper fares. Most Glasgow taxi drivers will charge extra after midnight, and may include a boundary charge if you go outside of the city.

When using private hire taxis, look out for a yellow license plate in the window and at the back of the car – all taxi drivers must hold a valid license. If they don’t, don’t get in the taxi.

Glasgow Taxi Hire for Airport Transfers

Glasgow BAA airport is located 8 miles out of the city centre, and takes around 20 minutes to reach by road. Many passengers choose taxi travel as the most convenient way to start their journey. Glasgow Prestwick airport is located 32 miles away from the city centre.

Many private Glasgow taxi hire firms will work out a fixed fee for airport transfers, or you can pick up a taxi directly from the taxi ranks at either airport. Taking a black cab from the city centre to the airport isn’t recommended, as you’ll be charged a boundary fee for leaving the city.

Using A Taxi in Glasgow

Many bars and clubs are very popular in Glasgow on the weekends, so getting a taxi when these close may be difficult. For your best chances, book in advance or have a wide number of taxi numbers available to phone. It’s also recommended that you pre-book your taxi if you’re travelling very early in the morning or are going a longer route.

Make sure that any Glasgow taxi you take is licensed, and don’t get in the taxi if it isn’t. In general, Glasgow taxi hire companies are extremely safe and provide an easy way to travel, as long as you take these tips on board.
