Dundee City, or Dundee for short, is the fourth largest in Scotland. Situated on the Firth of Tay, there is evidence that the city has been occupied since the Mesolithic era. Today, Dundee is known as the “City of Discovery” and boasts a wide range of attractions for visitors.
History of Dundee
Dundee has been occupied for thousands of years, and some of the earliest remains are the Law Hill Fort from the Iron Age.
The history of Dundee as an important town dates back to the High Middle Ages, where it quickly grew thanks to its position by the river making it an ideal trading port. An English garrison was installed at Dundee Castle at the start of the First War of Independence in 1296.
Walls were built around the city in 1545, and Dundee was attacked in 1651 during the Third English Civil War. There were many periods of occupation and destruction in the these centuries, explaining the need for the walls that now only remain at the Wishart Arch.
The Industrial Revolution saw a fast expansion of the city, which was famous for the jute industry, and later for jam and journalism. Dundee is famous for the children’s publications “The Dandy” and “The Beano”. There was also once a significant whaling and maritime industry in the city.
